P.E.R.K. Consulting Awards International Student with NextGen Scholarship
WASHINGTON, D.C.— Nonprofit and small business consulting firm, P.E.R.K. Consulting, is proud to announce Ivan Reimers as the recipient of the 2014 NextGen Scholarship. The NextGen Scholarship fund is awarded annually to a deserving international or non-citizen student striving to obtain higher education. Ivan Reimers, an incoming freshman at the University of Maryland, College Park, will be the first recipient of this premier local scholarship.
During her time in college, P.E.R.K. Consulting president Andrena Sawyer, saw firsthand the lack of resources available to international students. Sawyer found it problematic that many deserving students missed out on good opportunities because of their international student status. As a result, the NextGen Scholarship Fund was created to financially help those who have come to the United States with the hopes of attending college and creating a better life for themselves and their families. Applicants this year hailed from a diverse range of countries including Nigeria, Grenada, Turkey, Guatemala, Uganda, Jamaica, and the Central African Republic.
Ivan Reimers, a recent graduate of Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, thoroughly impressed the scholarship panel with his academic merit, leadership qualities, and service to others. Reimers’ family is originally from Venezuela and relocated to the United States when Ivan was eight years old . Since then, Ivan has compiled an impressive resume which includes tutoring with his high school’s ESOL program, drum major of the Montgomery Blair Marching Band, and a team leader in Montgomery Blair’s Robotic Team. Reimers is recognized as a National Hispanic Scholar and will be attending the University of Maryland at College Park to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. On October 18th, Reimers was honored for his achievement during P.E.R.K. Consulting’s annual Embracing YOU Conference.
The NextGen Scholarship is a local scholarship program for international and non-citizen students residing in or attending a college in the Washington metropolitan. Qualifying applicants must be college-accepted high school seniors or current undergraduate students attending a two year or four year college. Applications are available in the spring and recipients are notified during the summer.
