Client Spotlight: Culture New Norm

Since our launch, we have worked with some of the most dynamic individuals and organizations in our community. Over the past few months, you may have noticed spotlights of them on our website, newsletter and social media platforms! Our final spotlight is Culture New Norm.

Culture New Norm is an organization that launched with the mission to re-define the perception of fellowship by hosting alternative parties and events for young adults without compromise.

Co-founders: Tawanna Burks, and Veronica Holmes

Why did you start your organization?
We actually stumbled into the idea. We were tired of only having the opportunity of going out to eat, the movies, or a game night as saved young adults. We wanted more so we threw a party for college students that grew into the demographic that we have now of 25-35.

What does your organization do?
Culture New Norm is an organization that throws Christian hip-hop parties for young adults. We also have branched out into Worship nights and a Men’s group. Our men’s group is called The Link and that is geared to men hanging out and encouraging one another.

What was your most memorable project?
Our most memorable project to date would be our New Years Eve party. This one was a little different from most of our parties. It was the first time that we had live performers, we served food, and we were located on U street. All in all the party was amazing, and one of our most well-attended parties to date. We really wanted to perfect the experience that our attenders receive and I think with that party we did.

What is one challenge you faced, and how did you overcome it?
One of the many challenges that Culture faces is explaining to people what to expect at a Culture New Norm party. This is something that has never been done before so people don’t know what to expect and might have some preconceived notions about the music. We overcome this challenge through prayer and fully explaining the heart of Culture and showing a video clip or the Facebook page. As soon as people step foot into the party itself and experience it, they are no longer apprehensive.

What is your advice to someone thinking about becoming an entrepreneur or starting a nonprofit?
Go for it. Don’t sit back in fear thinking that there is too much to do, or it requires too much money. What looks like a big mountain from afar can only be overcome one step at a time. It does not all get done in a day, or a week, or a year. It gets done one steps at a time and you will have the energy to take that next step once you take the first.
