Follow the Yellow Brick Road

Follow the Yellow Brick Road

Most people have either heard of or seen the famous Wizard of Oz, and know that Dorothy’s main goal was to get home to her family. However, in the process she had to overcome some obstacles and face some fears. And as a result, of her continued diligence she was able to achieve her goal of getting home. As I was thinking of how to articulate my topic for this blog, that story immediately came to mind. Like many people, I have sometimes felt as Dorothy did in trying to reach my goals; there was a struggle, confusion, fear, and ultimately success. However, at some point along the way I lost my direction, just as Dorothy and her friends did.

One of the most rewarding experiences in my life, is knowing the path that I am on is the path that God has chosen for me- my “yellow brick road.”   I have reached a point in my life where I want to live my life ON PURPOSE and not just day to day with no clear direction.  I believe every person has some destiny or purpose for their life. The key is to, first, acknowledge that and, second, determine what skills you have. It is important to know what you are good at, and what you excel at. It is also equally important to know what you enjoy doing.  With these two elements, discovering your purpose/destiny can begin. Sounds easy right?

I do not believe that anything worth having is going to be easy, but it is achievable.  I know how much I enjoy people, being surrounded by people, and helping so I took that and identified that my skills and enjoyment would most be suited for a career in the helping arena. I am currently a Substance Abuse case manager and I love what I do! But had I not taken the time to identify, not only my skills, but what I enjoy most, I would still be on a search now.

Another useful way of discovering these skills is to use the people closest to you as a resource. The ones that interact with you the most and know you the best can be a useful tool in identifying what skills you have. For those of us who are Christian, like myself, one of the greatest and most reliable, if not THE only reliable, resource we have to tap into what our purpose here is, is GOD. I think with continued prayer and maybe fasting, identifying your purpose can be achieved. God wants us to live on purpose. He designed and desires us to live a life full of purpose so that His goal of reaching others can be achieved through us. With that, I believe He also shows us what gifts He has given to help in achieving our purpose. And sometimes identifying those gifts is the catalyst that we need to move forward in our purpose.

So good luck and God bless on your journey of self-discovery. Enjoy the Journey!
